Polina Medvedeva & Andreas Kühne - The Informals / Неформалы (cancelled)

Sat 24 Oct 2020 - 15:00 to 23:30
Klankenbos, Toekomstlaan 5, 3910 Neerpelt

In the abandoned military zone of Murmansk, Russia, young people come together to improvise collectivity and thus give new meaning to the vacant buildings in the area. Polina Medvedeva and Andreas Kühne present their experimental field improvisations in a documentary performance, the narrative of which is created during the performance itself.

The Informals / Неформалы is partly an autobiographical work, partly a universal statement on the notions of decentralisation, collectivism, and non-conformist ways of living in the digital age. Polina Medvedeva and Andreas Kühne research improvisational techniques in the medium of documentary. Their methodology resembles the patterns of the digital natives of Murmansk. In order to escape the norms and social constructs of Northern Russia, young people in Murmansk gravitate to deserted spaces in their area, where they collectively improvise with space, adding a new layer to its genealogy. Medvedeva and Kühne traveled back to the former military zone where Medvedeva was born and through documentation and field improvisation, much like the youths of the Murmansk region, temporarily transferred it into the present. The data they have collected is divided into elements and prepared for live triggering and processing. It resembles an audiovisual instrument which, when played by the artist duo, produces new unscripted versions with each live performance.

Polina Medvedeva is a Russian-Dutch filmmaker and artist based in Amsterdam. Her work researches the notion of informality, focusing on informal economies and non-conformist communal structures, their principles influencing the aesthetics of her videos. Medvedeva’s works have been exhibited at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Sonic Acts Festival, WIELS, Al-Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art, etc. and screened during IDFA Docs for Sale and on VPRO among others. She was a guest lecturer at the public school for architecture brussels, Sandberg Instituut Amsterdam, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, ArtEZ Zwolle, a tutor and lecturer at the Utrecht School of the Arts and a resident at Rijksakademie Amsterdam for the period 2020-2022.

Andreas Kühne is an improviser, sound artist, and drummer whose artistic practice involves creating audiovisual works and producing field improvisations by means of audiolising space and using extended techniques in order to reveal musical qualities of on-site inert objects. His sound designs consist of live electronics setups for real-time generation and manipulation of analog audio signal, re-attributing the method of free improvisation to digital culture. He is a Master of Music graduate from the ArtEZ University of Arts, and is the founder and curator of the interdisciplinary concert series RAMSES/ MPRO in Amsterdam. Recent and upcoming performances include A4 cultural space, Lofoten International Art Festival, Sonic Acts Festival, among others. Kühne is artist-in-residence at Splendor and at Ramses Shaffy Huis, teaches drums at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and has been a guest tutor at Utrecht School of the Arts.

The piece has been commissioned by Sonic Acts and Inversia Festival, Murmansk as part of Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

This performance is part of the parcours programme which takes place on saturday 24.10 at Provinciaal Domein Dommelhof and will be performed three times between 15:00 and 23:30.
