Dominik ‘t Jolle – Phantomphonia (cancelled)

Sat 24 Oct 2020 - 15:00 to 22:30
Provinciaal Domein Dommelhof, Toekomstlaan 5, 3910 Neerpelt

“The sounds chills your spine:

You can’t close your ears; you are defenseless.

You cover the ears, but your skin is still exposed.

You can’t see it coming either.

Stealthily,

Insidiously,

it wriggles its way toward you, bristling with an unfathomable potential for replication.

It wants you.

At least, it wants to use you.

And then leave.

Its approaches with the croaking, crackling, chittering, seething intimacy of microbial life.

It induces the sonic equivalent of déjà-vu ( déjà-entendue ?);

You are sure that sound is familiar, but perhaps not from this lifetime;

Those serrated frequencies have resonated before with some part of your body, and that anomalous recognition testifies to the acoustic memory implant folded in your body, latent, waiting to be reactivated

by a future that is filtering in”

(Leif Elggren)

From digging water wells in Niger, organizing medical aid in the Philippines to other community based projects in West Africa and Belgium, Dominik ‘t Jolle has a long term interest in people, culture, place and misplacement with a focus on building personal relationships and living for extended periods of time with rural and urban communities. Through film, sound art and installations, she wants to raise the profile and awareness about culturally, socially, ecologically and spatially marginalized living conditions.

Dominik ‘t Jolle (BE) has been suffering from tinnitus and even sound hallucinations for much of her life. As a sound artist, she wants to translate those impressions and hypersensitivity by investigating the relationship between stress, stored information and the activities of neuronal connections in the different brain areas. In the context of the listening program at OORtreders Festival she creates a new sound installation which was inspired by reading a note from the Swedish artist Leif Elggren about Sonic Warfare.

This soundpiece is part of the Listening Program curated by Dominik ‘t Jolle as part of the parcours program which takes place on saturday 24.10 at Provinciaal Domein Dommelhof and will be performed three times between 15:00 and 23:30.
