In w a t e r w a s w a s s e r, theatre maker Dounia Mahammed allows you a glimpse of her inner world. Her ingenious text is as light-footed as it is profound, taking you through fundamental questions, everyday worries, rhymes and absurd sidetracks. The improvisations by the pianist Alan Van Rompuy turn this solo into a lively dialogue. W a t e r w a s w a s s e r is a quirky, poetic performance that makes you painfully - and happily - aware of the fluidity of life. Language turns into music, with only the word to hold onto.

“The text in four languages is full of false floors, word games and slant rhymes. With her virtuoso use of language, sound and rhythm, she makes the banal seem brilliant and the rusty turn liquid. Mahammed puts it in a Socratic perspective: ‘I don’t know’ recurs again and again. Because it is only by thinking of language and reality as one big riddle that she can whisk you away, like a charismatic Alice, to her Wonderland. Serious stuff.” – De Standaard (*****)
