Elsa M'Bala divides her time between Germany and Cameroon. In her work as a writer and performer she explores the complex experience of living as a black woman between these two worlds. With 'U-jazdowski' she transforms an age-old 'Lukasa' into an interactive instrument. The "Lukasa" ("memory shelf") is a mnemonic device from pre-colonial Luba (modern-day Congo). Elsa devised a graphic notation system to make the instrument accessible to a wide audience. In this way, this obscure device literally acquires a contemporary voice.
