Silke Huysmans & Hannes Dereere - Pleasant Island (cancelled)

Fri 23 Oct 2020 - 21:00 to 22:15
Provinciaal Domein Dommelhof, Toekomstlaan 5, 3910 Neerpelt

Hidden in the pacific ocean lies the small island-state Nauru, once called Pleasant Island by British whalers. The history of this island can be read as a parable of our modern age. After the discovery of a vast reserve of phosphate in its soil, the island became one of the world’s richest countries. Under Australian supervision, each plot of land, each garden, each corner of the island was dug up and mined, until nothing remained and all its natural resources had been depleted.

In this ruined lunar landscape and heavily sponsored by Australia, Nauru houses many refugee camps on the island. The situation of the refugees on the ground is hopeless. At the same time, the island itself is threatened by an increasing sea level. In this post-apocalyptic setting, documentary theater makers Silke Huysmans and Hannes Dereere (BE) collide with the boundaries of a world focused on endless growth.

On the basis of interviews and conversations that they recorded on the island, they search for perspective. What remains of a place that has been ecologically and economically destroyed? How do we deal with the gray image of the future that hangs over us all?
